Amsterdam, 30 June 2022 - Smart Freight Centre releases the 2021 Clean Cargo Global Ocean Container Greenhouse Gas Emission Intensities report. This annual report is one way that Clean Cargo supports transparent tracking of the greenhouse gas emissions associated with ocean containerized cargo transportation.

Clean Cargo is a collaborative initiative between ocean container carriers, freight forwarders, and cargo owners that supports members in their work to decarbonize containerized ocean cargo transportation. Each year, the Clean Cargo secretariat collects operational and technical data from ocean carriers to generate carrier-specific containership emission performance information that:

  • Facilitates accurate greenhouse gas emissions inventory calculations for Clean Cargo members.
  • Guides member companies in making educated ocean freight procurement decisions.

The Clean Cargo secretariat also releases greenhouse gas emission intensities averaged across all Clean Cargo member carriers for use by the public. The global ocean container greenhouse gas emission intensity report released today includes these average intensities for a variety of global ocean container trade lanes.

The information in this year’s public report is based on data from the 18 ocean container carriers, with over 3,700 vessels, who participated in 2021 performance reporting through Clean Cargo. The emissions performance information presented in the latest report is calculated according to the Clean Cargo methods.

“One of our goals at Smart Freight Centre is to guide the global logistics industry to track and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. Annual Clean Cargo reporting, and releasing average containership greenhouse gas emission performance information to the public, is one of many important ways we achieve that goal.” said Rickard Lindstrom, Program Manager for Clean Cargo
