More than 98% of the company’s 16 million tonnes CO2e are generated by subcontracted (scope 3) transportation. Logistics emissions are generated from air (60.5%), sea (15.3%) and road transportation that includes logistics sites (22.9%), and the remainder is from buildings, company cars and business flights (1.3%).

Report and set targets
- Reports carbon emissions to customers for the services provided to them. Emissions are calculated at the corporate and customer level using the EcoTransIT World tool in conformance with the GLEC Framework.
- Sets approved science-based targets, committing to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 40% and scope 3 emissions with 30% by 2030 from a 2019 base year.
Reduce
- Consolidates customers’ shipments to make sure that trailers and containers are optimally loaded with consideration for cargo weight, volume and density. In 2019, this led to energy efficiency improvements of 5% for road, 2% for air and 8% for sea transport.
- Chooses the right transport modes and routes, which is possible if customers are more flexible on time of delivery. This is important as air freight generates about 100 times more CO2e per tonne-km than sea and 9 times more than road.
Optimizes supply chains with large customers from a cost, service and sustainability perspective. The company’s Supply Chain Innovation team on average finds 10-15% cost savings. - Reduced the number of truck trips and emissions by 50% for a construction project in Copenhagen. DSV transported 22,000 concrete rings to form a 15.5 km tunnel to three locations in the city. By using 4 axle instead of 3 axle flatbed trailers, it was possible to load two entire concrete rings on each truck. In addition, padding layers between stacked concrete pieces were reduced to lower the total height of the truck-load with 30 cm – this allowed drivers to use shorter routes on which bridges would otherwise have hindered passage.
- Reduced 20% of CO2 emissions for its global customer L’Oréal in Singapore by using biodiesel in its delivery trucks. Each day 4,000 litres of vegetable oil and animal fat is collected from restaurants across Singapore of which 90% is converted into biofuel, reducing waste and air pollution.
Collaborate
- Reports to sustainability rating platform EcoVadis and corporate disclosure platform CDP.
- Joined the Clean Cargo and Sustainable Air Freight Alliance to track and reduce emissions from maritime container and air freight.
- Makes suppliers commit to the Supplier Code of Conduct which will be expanded with collaboration on solutions to reach science-based emission reduction targets.
