Trafigura

As a major commodity trading company Trafigura sources, stores, blends and transports base metals and energy. It comes as no surprise that in 2018 the total shipping emissions were about 4.74 million tCO2e, which represent of 89% of Trafigura’s total GHG inventory.

"Trafigura is supporting the sectoral implementation of the GLEC Framework. When we introduced the methodology we extended the scope of our emissions data collection, and our reported emissions increased, but a standardized methodology for reporting the emissions from all our logistical activities will help us manage emissions strategically.”

Richard Head
Global Head of HSEC, Trafigura

Report

  • Adopted the GLEC Framework, recognizing that it is evolving into the industry standard, consistent with the GHG Protocol and supporting more reliable CDP disclosure. Trafigura carried out a gap analysis against the GLEC Framework. First, it showed that adoption of the GLEC Framework is possible with only few modifications to in-house calculation methods and systems. Second, it clearly identified reporting gaps, hotspots where improvement opportunities lie, and that better quality data is needed especially from spot charters, trucking and rail.

Reduce

  • Has taken action to reduce bunker fuel consumption from ocean-fleet, such as just in time arrival in harbors. Trafigura aims to charter more newly designed ships that, depending on vessel size, burn 4-8 tonnes less of fuel oil per day than the average performing older vessels in the market. Trafigura helped establish a multi-transport corridor* in Colombia using 120 barges and 20 tugs to move both wet and dry freight on the Magdalena River from the river terminal to coastal ports, reducing truck journeys and achieving a 24% reduction in GHG emissions.

Collaborate

  • Advocates for long-term strategy to decarbonize seaborne trade of commodities through the Global Maritime Forum*, that includes emissions transparency through a bulk-shipping module within the GLEC Framework.

Founded in 1993, Trafigura is one of the largest physical commodities trading groups in the world. Trafigura sources, stores, transports and delivers a range of raw materials including oil and refined products and metals and minerals to clients around the world. The Group has been connecting its customers to the global economy for more than two decades, growing prosperity by advancing trade.
