Unilever

UPS’s strategy is guided by its purpose: moving our world forward by delivering what matters. To meet the challenges of today and tomorrow, UPS is aligning its ESG efforts with its corporate strategy – Customer First, People Led, Innovation Driven. Determined to continue its leadership in decarbonizing the transportation sector, UPS has committed to 100% carbon neutrality by 2050, setting clear goals along the way to achieve a lower carbon footprint in a financially and socially responsible way.

The UPS decarbonization strategy includes the following:

  • Network efficiency to reduce miles driven and flown
  • Renewable electricity in our facilities
  • Sustainable aviation fuel
  • Fleet electrification
  • Renewables and bio-fuels

UPS operates one of the largest airlines in the world, with the air fleet representing a large portion of its global footprint. Since 2005, UPS airlines has reduced its carbon intensity 13% through improved aviation procedures and aircraft enhancements. It is committed to using 30% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2035.

As ecommerce volume continues to rise, UPS recognizes the need to delink the growth in package delivery from the growth of its carbon emissions. From 2010 to 2020, it has seen a 14% reduction in CO2e per package, and will reduce the carbon intensity per package by an additional 50% by 2035 from a 2020 baseline.

"At UPS, we’re on a path moving forward, guided by sound engineering principles and a commitment to integrity. We’re exploring wide-ranging technological innovations and efficiencies to provide solutions that produce results that are real and sustainable."

Vice President, Sustainability

Report and set targets

UPS’s sustainability reports are developed in accordance with the most comprehensive level of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Global Standards. The company has voluntarily followed GRI reporting guidelines since 2003, and seeks to ensure consistent greenhouse gas (GHG) measurement standard with GRI.

  • It publishes Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) and Taskforce on Climate-Related Financial Disclosure (TCFD.)
  • UPS engages Deloitte each year to verify the data and content featured in our sustainability reports (GRI Content Index and SASB). Since 2009, it’s had sustainability reports assured, and its GHG data has been assured since 2010.

Reduce

UPS is reimagining its network through an innovation-driven strategy that includes electric ground and air vehicles, cleaner-burning fuel and climate-conscious facilities.

  • Invested more than $1 billion over the past decade in alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles and fueling stations.
  • Has one of the world’s largest fleet of alternative fuel vehicles: 22% of global ground fleet is on alternative fuel, including the largest RNG/CNG fleet in the U.S. UPS plans to purchase more than 10,000 electric vehicles and is transitioning to have 40% alternative fuel in ground operations by 2025.
  • Committed to purchase 250 million gallon equivalents of renewable natural gas (RNG) over the next several years, becoming the largest consumer of RNG in the transportation industry.
  • Transforming energy usage at our worldwide facilities to 25% renewable energy by 2025 and 100% by 2035.
  • Invested in electric vertical take-off and landing (eVOTL) aircraft through its Freight Forward program.
  • Constantly testing new technologies, including hydrogen trucks, with a Rolling Laboratory.

Collaborate

UPS is continuing to develop sustainable solutions that help reduce climate impacts across customer supply chains worldwide. Some ways the company works with others to create innovative, scalable solutions include:

  • Deploying bespoke purpose built Generation 2 electric vehicles co-developed with Arrival’s technologies to match UPS’s specifications.
  • Partnering with local organizations to upcycle their famous brown uniforms into new products.
  • Planting trees with local communities around the world – more than 15 million planted to date, we have committed to plant a total of 50 million trees by 2030.
